“This would be better with a lantern,” Diego complained, tripping over another set of breaching roots. He cursed to himself each time it happened, then continued trudging through the night. “Or a flashlight—damn these things. Remember those?”

“Law wants us hidden while we watch,” Judge said. “Our eyes will adjust. Eventually.” Though he had his doubts. The night was uncommonly dark. Clouds and covert branches took the moon, which would have otherwise been fat, bright, and high. Sounds of camp muffled the farther they trekked, altogether hushing once a wall of thorns clasped behind them. Judge’s right steps always felt fainter than his left. Dry limbs brushed over his sleeves, scratching weakly, desperate to hold him. Not an owl hooted; not a bug buzzed or whistled or chirped. An occasional snap of twigs, the crunch of shrubs, brush and knee-high grasses, and silence in his ear were the company he claimed. That and a thumping Diego.
